New Zealander KATE HAWLEY grew up in the world of Opera and Theatre. After studying graphic design, She won a scholarship which enabled her to attend The Motley School of Theatre Design in London under the Direction of Margaret Harris and Alison Chitty.
This provided the foundation and a love for design in all disciplines of her work within the world of Theatre, Ballet, Opera and her career in Film. The feature film credits of costume designer KATE HAWLEY include her recent work as Costume designer and frequent collaborator on both Guillermo del Toro's FRANKENSTEIN and his gothic romance CRIMSON PEAK. Credits also include David Ayer's SUICIDE SQUAD for Warner Brothers starring Margot Robbie and Doug Liman and Christopher McQuarrie's ALL YOU NEED IS KILL - with designs for Tom Cruise, Emily Blunt and Bill Paxton through Warner Brothers Studios.. Kate also collaborated with Guillermo del Toro on the Warner Bros/Legendary action/sci-fi production ""PACIFIC RIM"", and with Peter Jackson on projects including ""THE HOBBIT"" and the ""THE LOVELY BONES.""
Her extensive theatre and opera credits include productions of BITTER CALM and
""THE TRIAL OF THE CANNIBAL DOG"" for the New Zealand International Arts Festival; ""LUCIA DI LAMMERMOOR"" and LA BOHEME at the NBR New Zealand Opera; ""THE LOVE OF THE NIGHTINGALE"" for the Western Australian Opera; BLITHE SPIRIT"" at the Salisbury Playhouse; and ""LA BOHEME,"" at the Wexford Opera restival. Additionally, Hawley served as costume designer and production designer for ""ALBERT HERRING "" at the Aldeburgh Festival, England.
Hawley's designs have also been presented at numerous exhibitions, including an upcoming exhibit of THE ART OF FRANKENSTEIN at Selfridges in London, ""AT HOME WITH MONSTERS at LACMA, Los Angeles and at the AGO Toronto, the Motley Theatre Design Exhibition at the Royal National Theatre in London, FRANTISEK ZELENKA Exhibition at Central St. Martins (London), and the International SCENOFEST Exhibition in Prague and at The Barbican in London.
Her awards include EMMY NOMINATION for RINGS OF POWER, SATURN and EMPIRE awards for CRIMSON PEAK. The Costume designer's Guild Awards for excellence in Sci fi / fantasy. The Gold Key Award from the Bretislay Film Festival for her designs for the Channel 4/BBC production of ""T DANCE""; the Queen Elizabeth 2nd Arts Council Award for Opera Studies; the Prague Quadrennial 99 Award for Emerging Young Artists; and the Television New Zealand Young Achievers Award.
